Emergency

Summer/autumn 2001, Salford

During the autumn of 2001, I undertook a six-week residency at the Glassbox Gallery at Salford University. The Glassbox Gallery, as the name suggests is a glass-walled space, situated in the entrance of the main administrative building for the university. The space can be viewed from the main staircase, the student radio station, the Student Union bar and a corridor leading to the refectory and nurse’s office. For my residency, I took inspiration from its close proximity to the nurse’s office. I looked at emergency situations that students may find themselves in, and adapted these to a first aid format. To allow the work to be viewed from all sides, I decided to draw directly onto the glass using marker pens. It was quite unusual, and a challenge for me, to create my work with people watching me closely from the other side, some enjoying a drink of beer as they tried to work out what I was drawing!
