Fold Here

2000, Manchester

During 2000, I was working on a set of instructions showing how to fold your knickers. I did this using photography and line drawing, but gradually began to see the possibility for movement within this series of actions. I decided to develop this project further by creating a performance piece. Initially, I shared this work in progress with my fellow students in the Performance Space at Manchester Metropolitan University, creating an environment where I could experiment and receive feedback and criticism. The work was shown in a blacked out space, with the only light source being a monitor showing a Super 8 film of shirts being folded. During the performance, I took knickers and shirts from a pile on the table and proceeded to fold these until everything was neat and tidy. Having received positive feedback, I decided to develop the piece further, and showed it at the National Review of Live Art at the Greenroom in Manchester.
