FRED 2006

October 2006, Cumbria

FRED is an art invasion that takes place across Cumbria each year, with artists making work in many different settings and in lots of different mediums. I worked on a FRED project myself in 2004, with my instructional diagrams for folding ticket sculptures being printed onto Pay-and-Display car park tickets. In 2006 I was invited to work on the FRED guide and accompanying marketing material. This commission resulted in a printed guide inviting visitors to explore the area and spot the art along the way.

With Cumbria being an area where people like to go walking, cycling, running and so on, I wanted to encourage a sense of adventure and suggest that people make an expedition of their visit. Alongside the guide, I had sew-on patches, pin badges and walking stick badges produced and these were available -for free - from Tourist Information offices throughout the area.

When I went up to Kirkby Stephen for the FRED closing party, I walked up to Nine Standards Rigg and did, in fact, ‘Dip my toes’.
