How to Make a Bus Sculpture

February 2005, Salford

Making Bus Sculptures is something I have always done whilst willing time to pass on a boring bus journey. Over a period of a few months, I collected these little paper creations and documented them photographically. I quickly built up quite a collection and decided to propose an exhibition around this idea. My solo exhibition took place at the Chapman Gallery at Salford University and included a few different installations that played around with the environment of the bus and the actions of the sculpture making.

I took a series of photographs of these sculptures and also made a film giving instruction in how to fold your own. I had become aware of the fact that my beloved Routemaster bus was being phased out in London (this is the bus where most of my sculptures were created) so made a Routemaster Wallpaper to commemorate this – the blocks of brown, beige and gold covered the whole of one gallery wall, giving the feel of a big comfy seat.
