How to Make a Ticket Sculpture – FRED

October 2004, Cumbria

FRED is a huge art invasion that takes place all over Cumbria each year. During the first year of FRED I was invited to make a series of little interventions. I had been working on a series of images of ticket sculptures: small paper structures made by twiddling a ticket in your hand, and I had access to Pay-and-Display car park machines all over Cumbria. This meant I was able to have my work printed on the reverse of these tickets – a space usually reserved for advertising – and send my ideas out on around 200,000 tickets!

I liked the idea that people would happen upon my work and display it in their car window, just the kind of distribution I love.
