Imperceptible

March 2005, Birmingham

This piece signalled the start of my exploration of how people behave in urban spaces. Punch and Vivid commissioned me to make a Multi Media piece as part of their ongoing programme called ‘What is Urban?’. For this project, I wanted to spend time in Birmingham, looking at how people negotiate a space for themselves amongst the crowd. I looked closely at how we go into our own world and quietly block out those around us as we delve into a book, eat our lunch or lose ourselves in some private music. Filming covertly, I created a series of portraits of the people who inhabited their own little spaces within the wider space of the city, focussing on their tiny movements and gestures: the things that make us who we are.

This work was put together as a moving image piece and exhibited at mac in Birmingham and Wolverhampton Art Gallery; I also had a web presence so the project existed beyong the gallery shows.
