June 2005, London

As part of the City of London Festival, the Art and Church Enquiry organised this group exhibition Insight: Six Contemporary Artists in Six City Churches. I was given the St Stephen Walbrook church to show my work, and immediately focussed on the fact that the Samaritans was founded in the crypt of the church in the 1950s. This incredible space is a Wren designed building and has a very simple white interior with dark wooden panelling. I was struck by the monochrome space and decided to create a series of colourful light boxes to suggest stained glass windows against the almost blackness of the panelling.

I wanted to suggest that anyone could be a Samaritan or need a Samaritan at some point in their lives, so created a series of portraits of people on the telephone (in the space there are two plinths on display, showing the phones used by the Samaritans in the crypt).
