Lost Something
1999, web based
This website went live at the end of 1999. It is a web version of a project I had started in 1998, where I documented all the items I had picked up in the street, placing them in bags and noting the date, where they were found and at what time. I took the items, ranging from coins to toys, shoes and sweet wrappers, and scanned them in, creating an image to go on the website, which was created with the help of Edward Hill. To publicise the site, I made little business-style cards showing the URL and stuck coins on the front; I was aware that people like to feel they are getting ’something for nothing’. I then ‘lost’ these cards along my day to day journeys, and gave them to friends to take on holiday, thus spreading the word further afield. The response was quite overwhelming, with hundreds of people filling in the response form, claiming objects as their own. Since lost-something went live, it has received coverage in national newspapers, magazines, and television. Most notably, I won the Freenetname ‘Best of…’ competition and was nominated for the International Media Art Award 2000.
