Lucky World

July 2004, web based

I have always picked up pennies on the street: find a penny, pick it up and all day long you’ll have good luck. For this project I decided to test the luck of these pennies. Over seven days I picked up seven pennies and then kept a journal of my luck for seven days, whilst carrying around a lucky penny. These pennies were then distributed for other people to do the same. The lucky penny recipients would then send me their journal in whatever form this took: written, photographic, collage and so on and I posted this to the Lucky Penny website for visitors to see how lucky the penny really was.

The project was part of an exhibition called Relay at Q-Arts Gallery in Derby - this was a group show looking at the notion of the relay in relation to the Olympic Games. Over a period of time the pennies were gradually re-lost and are hopefully nestling in someone’s pocket somewhere in the world bringing them lots and lots of good luck.
