Meander Map

November 2006, Nottingham

This interactive live art event was commissioned in 2006 by the BBC and Arts Council England to accompany the television series Simon Schama’s Power of Art.A number of artists were invited to go on a journey around different cities in the Uk and make work in response to this journey; my city was Nottingham. Having worked on many projects in Nottingham, I wanted this piece to take me to new areas, to help me discover something new about a city that I now know quite well, so I decided to allow the people of Nottingham to ‘tell me where to go’.

I worked closely with Sports Do to create an environment that allowed my audience to interact and to track me live online, through the use of a hand held GPS device and Windows Media phone. I asked the people I encountered along the way to tell me where I should go and also received text messages from remote visitors. This resulted in an exciting and interesting journey that did indeed take me to new areas and led to a meandering wander that, at times, felt almost chaotic, where I completely let go and handed over responsibility to my audience.
