place-non-place

September 2005, Nottingham

After making work for Day-to-Day Data at Angel Row Gallery in Nottingham, I was invited back to create a new piece to be shown in the Windows exhibition programme. At the time, the gallery was situated above the library in central Nottingham and the area that housed the stairs leading up to the main gallery was being utilised as an exhibition space in itself. I was struck by how exciting this space was, with a row of bus stops just outside the window, where a captive audience would wait throughout the day and night.

I wanted to examine this space and kind of play it back to itself. Spending time in Nottingham, I filmed covertly, observing the movements that people made as they waited around for the bus and also the movements made inside the gallery as people looked at the work on display; I wanted to see if there were any differences between these two situations. Looking closely at the film footage, I made a series of short animations showing the repeated movements, the swaying, foot-tapping and pondering that goes on in both settings.

These films were shown on two screens in the window, facing out onto the street, where viewers could spend time while they waited, working out which space was which.
